Sustainable Development through Environmental Excellence

Approach:

We take an active and responsible approach to the natural, economic and social environment around all our projects.

Sustainability is assessed at every stage of the development, in consultation with clients, consultants, trade contractors and local stakeholders to provide agreed solutions that are not only sympathetic to the environment and the community but add long term sustainable value.

This ‘Total Project’ approach brings together People, Policy, Procedures and Performance to enable delivery of environmental excellence, and provide a foundation for sustainable development.

Our Environmental Procedures are certified by ISO 14001.

Engage:

Engagement is the key to implementation, and our established, ISO 14001 certified, Environmental Management System (EMS) and Environmental Representatives Forum ensures that the right engagement takes place with the right people at the right time.

Implement:

From planning, to delivery on site, through to handover, commissioning and in use – sustainability forms an integral part of project delivery:

Environmental Assessment Methods: We always aim to deliver our buildings to the latest versions of BREEAM / LEED / CSH as they apply to the different types of project which we construct. By aiming to achieve the highest possible score within the overall brief of the building, we ensure that each building is ‘The Best that it can be’

Considerate Construction: We value participation in Considerate Constructor Schemes and place a great deal of importance in targeting and attaining high standards of compliance. In 2011 we were delighted to have been accepted as Associate Members of the National Considerate Constructor Scheme (CCS). This gives us the opportunity to share experiences and help drive improvements back into the construction industry for the benefit of the sector’s workforce and the communities in which we operate.

Stakeholder Liaison: We establish detailed communication plans and nurture good relationships with all our neighbours and stakeholders. we hold street level Q&A sessions with the general public. On our 20 Fenchurch Street Project we have established close involvement with both St Mary-at-Hill and St Margaret Pattens Churches and provide support and involvement in their planned events. We are also committed to Charity involvement, including the 21st Century Legacy Programme.

Sensitive Receptors: At Canary Wharf and indeed all our projects we are surrounded by extremely sensitive receptors. The Natural and Built Environment is always right on our Projects ‘doorstep’ and consequently we establish, develop and maintain a comprehensive environmental management system that not only mitigates the risk of environmental incident but highlights opportunities for sustainable improvements in the surroundings in which we operate.

Sustainable Procurement: We have a unique ability at Canary Wharf to influence our own building specification and material sourcing parameters. Through interrogating designs and fully engaging with the BREEAM process we are able to deliver major build elements which are certified as sustainable sourced under the most stringent industry recognised, Responsible Sourcing Schemes.

Waste; We minimise waste through a robust engagement programme with all of our Designers and Trade Contractors .This leads to the development of our bespoke Project Site Waste Minimisation and Management Plans which have delivered some real innovations with regards to waste elimination. Our online waste management system captures real time waste data form all of our contractors and ensures that waste management remains an active and constant focus

Environmental, Economic and Social Opportunity: True sustainability is always delivered when we bring together and balance environmental improvements with economic and social benefits. Making use of existing premises to provide a service which benefits the environment, the community and the project is a great innovation. This has been achieved on our projects where we have established a Project Hire Shop and Job Brokerage Scheme

Perform:

Our EMS provides the framework for delivering sustainability and our Key Performance Indicators measure our success. These levels of performance are defined by our sustainability targets:-

·        ZERO Environmental Incidents

·        ZERO Waste

·        ZERO Non-FSC Timber

·        Reduced construction phase carbon emissions

·        Minimised construction phase water use

·        Rationalised construction transport deliveries

·        Maximised certified sustainably sourced materials

·        A National Considerate Constructor Scheme score of 36 or more

·        Highest BREEAM / LEED / CfSH ratings possible

·        Best Practice as standard

We hold high expectations for our People and our Trade Contractor Supply Base, so in terms of project performance our philosophy is very simple: Best Practice is our starting point.

Our EMS creates the framework to exceed legislation, and our Sustainability Targets set the level of performance, so going forwards we can raise the bar to match rising standards.

This means we drive our performance to levels necessary to meet and overcome the global sustainability challenges that face us all…
