On Tuesday 30th June Canary Wharf and the Royal Opera House, in association with BP, will present this special relay of Verdi’s La traviata from the The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden to a giant outdoor screen within the beautiful open air surrounds of Canada Square Park. All are invited to bring family and friends, relax with a picnic and enjoy all the magic and excitement of this special screening set within the visually stunning backdrop of Canary Wharf.

The audience can expect an all-star line-up for this latest revival of one of the Royal Opera’s most popular productions, here once more directed by Richard Eyre who took charge of its original staging in 1994.

La traviata, by Giuseppe Verdi, is based on the true story of the short life of Marie Duplessis and the novel (and later, play) La Dame aux camélias by Alexandre Dumas, which laid bare the hypocrisy of a world that exploited courtesans but refused to give them a place among decent society.

Verdi’s heartfelt opera presents both the glitter of the fashionable milieu in which the heroine Violetta operates and the intimacy of her brief escape to happiness with Alfredo. Alas, ‘society’, personified by Alfredo’s father Germont, puts a stop to it.

The sumptuous American soprano Renée Fleming and her dashing countryman Thomas Hampson sing the roles of Violetta and Germont with the stylish Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja returning as Alfredo, a role for which he has won plaudits all over the world, including at Covent Garden. Antonio Pappano conducts this glamorous revival.

Space is available on a first-come first-served basis. No portable furniture, glass bottles or glass are allowed within any outdoor spaces. Outdoor events may be cancelled due to inclement weather. All details correct at time of distribution
