Two Canary Wharf Group building projects have won bronze awards from the Considerate Constructors Scheme.
The Pan Peninsula scheme at 1 Millharbour, managed on behalf of developer Ballymore Properties Limited by Canary Wharf Contractors Limited (CWCL), and the 20 and 25 Churchill Place project on the Canary Wharf Estate both won bronze awards at a recent Awards dinner.
The Considerate Constructors Scheme is designed to improve the image of construction through better management and presentation of sites, over and above the statutory requirements.
Measures to lessen environmental impact, including a comprehensive traffic management scheme at the Churchill Place project, were among the aspects highly commended by the Considerate Constructors’ site monitor. These included using waterways to transport materials and an innovative web-booking scheme for deliveries to reduce road congestion. Both of the projects achieved a materials recycling rate of over 80% and used local suppliers where possible.
To earn a Considerate Constructors Award, building sites have to achieve a score of 95%+ in four quarterly audits on criteria such as environmental friendliness, safety, consideration and being a good neighbour. Of the 6,500 eligible sites throughout the UK, only 7.5% won an award in 2008.
CWCL was also recently named as one of the Sunday Times 50 Best Green Companies in the UK.
Cormac MacCrann, Executive Director of Construction at CWCL said:
“Given the wide range and sheer volume of activity taking place on the Canary Wharf Estate and surrounding areas, it is particularly important for Canary Wharf Contractors to lessen the impact on the environment, minimise disruption to our neighbours and ensure the welfare of people working on our sites.”
“We are extremely pleased to see our efforts recognised in this way, and will continue to work towards the highest standards to protect the environment, minimise disturbance to the local community and keep our people safe.”
Norman Reed, Chairman of the Considerate Constructors Scheme said:
“The winners are not just those receiving the Awards; they include the site’s neighbours and workforce, as well as the environment, and all those who benefit from the superb standards displayed by the winning constructors.”
Notes to Editor:
