Guests will include members of Jewish Care’s Stepney Community Centre, Dennis Special Day Care Centre, Brenner Community Centre and Nightingale House, East London Orthodox Synagogues Association representatives and employees from multi-national corporations. Menorah Primary School Boys’ Choir will be singing at the event and Allen Martin (Manager, Leaning and Development – HSBC Bank PLC), will be speaking.

Shavuot (also known as Shavuos), the Jewish festival of weeks, marks the giving of the Ten Commandments by G-d to the Jewish people at Mount Sinai. Customs include decorating homes and synagogues with fruit and flowers and eating dairy food such as cheesecake. This year, the festival begins on Sunday evening (8th June) and ends in the evening of Tuesday 10th June.

NOTES TO EDITORS:

Shavuot (also known as Shavuos), the Jewish festival of weeks, marks the giving of the Ten Commandments by G-d to the Jewish people 3,319 years ago at Mount Sinai. In Hebrew, Shavuot means ‘weeks’ and refers to the seven weeks in which the Jewish people prepared themselves for the giving of the Torah (Old Testament) so that they could be a holy nation and be ready to stand before G-d.

Shavuot is also a harvest festival of barley, wheat and fruits; this marks the bringing of the first fruits to the holy temple as an expression of thanksgiving. Customs include decorating synagogues and homes with flowers and with fruit. It is also traditional to eat cheese cake, cheese blintzes and other dairy products over Shavuot, as when Jewish people were first given the Torah, the laws of separating meat and milk were not yet clear and they wanted to ensure that no rules were broken.
