LIGHTING DISPLAY ON ARCHWAY IN BRICK LANE IS SWITCHED ON IN CELEBRATION OF EID BY MAYOR OF LONDON KEN LIVINGSTONE

An archway display sponsored by Canary Wharf Group in conjunction with Tower Hamlets Council was lit yesterday at Brick Lane by Mayor of London Ken Livingstone in celebration of Eid.

The illuminations, which will remain on until the New Year, mark the first day that the new moon can be viewed from Mecca and so mark the end of the fasting month, Ramadan. This is the most holy month in the Muslim calendar marking when the Koran was revealed to the prophet. During the month Muslims donate a lot of money to charity and reflect on how fortunate they are in their own lives.

The switching-on ceremony was attended by Councillor Abbas – Leader of
Tower Hamlets Council, Shiraz Hoque - Chairman of the Brick Lane
Restaurant Association, the President of the Brick Lane Mosque – Ataur
Rahman Chowdhury, Robert John – Advisor to CWG, local VIPS/MPs,
councillors and directors of mosques around London.
