| On 20th October Canary Wharf Group will launch the last in its series of self-guided walking tours which focuses on the history of the area. This tour concentrates specifically on local points of interest such as Billingsgate Market and the Museum in Docklands, which opened in May. The 45 minute route also takes in the site of the old Limehouse Studios, one of several warehouses opened in 1954 which was converted into the country’s largest independent television production studios. Limehouse Productions was set up to coincide with the launch of Channel 4 and broadcast the infamous satirical puppet show, ‘Spitting Image’ before the studios were demolished in 1989. The accompanying brochure is filled with anecdotes and explains the meaning behind the names of the roads and areas around Canary Wharf which reflect the area’s historical roots. It also talks of Rum Quay, the original name for Canary Wharf before 1937 and its famous fire, as well as the devastation caused to the area during the Blitz. Walkers will be provided with background information and interesting facts along the route, allowing them to enjoy a different perspective of Canary Wharf. The self-guided walk brochures are free, and will be available from the Canary Wharf retail malls, the Museum of Docklands information centre, the One Canada Square reception as well as selected local cafes, hotels, and shops. The walks can also be downloaded from www.canarywharf.com This self-guided walk is the last in a series which also covers the
architecture and history of the estate. |
