Canary Wharf Group will once again be hosting its annual Sports Personality Awards and clubs and organisations are now being invited to send in their nominations for this year’s special awards. The ceremony will be held on Tuesday 14th October 2003 in Canary Wharf’s prestigious Cabot Hall venue.

Now in its third year, the awards were created as a formal recognition of the outstanding contribution to sport by young people and their leaders in Tower Hamlets and the Thames Gateway.

Last year the Sports Personality of the Year accolade was awarded to disabled swimmer Dervis Konuralp. The achievements and dedication of Dervis and all the young people in the area are all the more significant because the borough is historically associated with poverty and deprivation. As a company based in Tower Hamlets, Canary Wharf Group aims to highlight how sporting opportunities have helped young people to overcome these adversities and act as role models for others in the community.

People are invited to send in a description of their nominated individual or group achievements for 2003, together with a recent photograph. The deadline for award nominations is Friday August 29th 2003.

The nomination categories are:
- Individual Achievement Award – Sports Personality of the Year
- Junior Team of the Year Award
- Senior Team of the Year Award
- Group Team of the Year Award
- Special Awards for Voluntary Commitment
