CANARY WHARF HOSTS COMMUNITY FOOTBALL EVENT

In association with The Metropolitan Police Authority, Canary Wharf Group is hosting a community football event on Saturday 5th July 2003.

The aim of the event is to promote the police and fire services to members of the local Tower Hamlets community, comprising mainly of people from Asian backgrounds. Representatives of the services will be handing out leaflets and will be on hand to provide information and promote the benefits of joining these valuable professions.

Members from the Met police, the London Fire Service, the Asian Sports Federation and Canary Wharf Group will all play against each other in the football match. It is believed to be the first time that the local community, the Met and Fire services and the private sector have ever come together in a sporting event.

Zakir Khan, Canary Wharf Group’s Sports Development Manager said:

‘Canary Wharf Group has sponsored this event because we believe that
more Asian people should join the police and fire services. It should be a great day of competitive fun with the serious aim of recruiting people from the local community. ‘

The community football event is being held at the Stepney Astro-Turf pitch in Stepney Way, London E1. Kick off is at 12.30pm. It will be attended by the Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Bernard Howe and members of the public are invited to attend.
