| Canary Wharf Group launches the second in a new series of self-guided walking tours around the estate by holding special guided tours hosted by members of the in-house architectural design team. These walks will provide a unique opportunity to enjoy a different perspective of Canary Wharf and gain valuable insight from those responsible for its design. The hosts of these walks will explain the process that architects go through in their design of the buildings and public spaces on the estate, how they balance human needs with financial goals, how Canary Wharf has responded to the ever-growing needs of its users and the plans for the future of the development. Canary Wharf is the largest corporate development the UK has ever experienced and is set in the fastest growing area of London. Incorporating office buildings, open spaces and landscaped gardens, shopping malls, transport links and other public facilities, the built environment of the Canary Wharf Estate has a great impact on the way in which people who use those facilities live and work. Various architectural practices collaborated with masterplan architect Skidmore Owings & Merrill in order to draw up comprehensive design guidelines for the development in 1987 and some of the world’s leading architects have been involved in its creation. As a result, Canary Wharf is an extremely cohesive estate with each building interacting with its neighbours. The guided walks take place on 24th & 25th June at 1.00pm, starting
from outside the Jubilee Line station. Walkers will be provided with
background information and interesting facts along the 45 minute
route, allowing them to enjoy a different perspective of Canary Wharf.
The self-guided walk brochures are free and will be available from
the Canary Wharf retail malls, the Museum of Docklands information
centre, the One Canada Square reception as well as selected local
cafes, hotels, and shops. The walks can also be downloaded from www.canarywharf.com
