Wharf Group recently sponsored a Taekwon-Do competition on the Isle of
Dogs. Over 100 people under the age of 17 took part, with the youngest
participant being only five years old.
Taekwon-Do schools from all over London took part in the competition organised by the Youth Empowerment Group (YEG) in association with Canary Wharf Sports Development. For the majority of the locally based YEG students, it was the first time they had participated in such a competition but all the students coped admirably, in particular Onik Ahmed who, at 9 years of age, won his category. Kosru Uddin, instructor for the YEG Taekwon-Do 1st Degree Black Belt said, ”This is the first time a Taekwon-Do school has organised a competition in partnership with Canary Wharf Group plc and it has been an instant success. I hope this can now become an annual event.” Tom Denis, instructor for Docklands Taekwon-Do School, said, “I am extremely pleased with the level of interest shown by young participants. The credit must also go to Canary Wharf Group plc for helping to organise such a popular event.” Zakir Khan, Sports Development Manager for Canary Wharf Group plc,
was present throughout the day and presented the winners with their
trophies. He said, “The discipline and focus instilled during
classes was apparent within the young participants. They showed maturity
beyond their years and the high levels of confidence were visible for
all to see. In summary a very successful event.” YEG Taekwon-Do times: Saturdays and Sundays 11.00am to 1.00pm for under sixteen’s only at Haileybury Centre, Stepney. |
