A short service was held today to give thanks for the life of Pope John Paul ll. The 15-minute service in Cabot Square was an opportunity for anyone, no matter what their beliefs, to pray and light a candle and to show recognition of the historical contribution the Pope has made publicly to the life of the world over the last 27 years. The service was held outdoors to give the opportunity to everyone who wished to join in to do so, in recognition that the Pope was admired by many peoples.
The service was led by Catholic Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster Bernard Longley and Bishop Stephen Oliver, the Anglican Bishop of Stepney and was attended by dignitaries of various religions including Harmander Singh - representative from the Sikh community, as well as representatives from the Jewish faith and Catholic and Anglican clergy. Revd Dr Fiona Stewart-Darling, Chaplain of Docklands, co-ordinated the service. She said, “It was felt to be most important to mark the passing of Pope John Paul II and to give workers at Canary Wharf as well as members of the local community the opportunity to pay their respects.” |
