Today fourteen children from Chernobyl visited Canary Wharf and were presented with a cheque for £500 by Peter Wade, Head of Public Affairs at Canary Wharf Group. The visit was organised by the charity Chernobyl Children Life Line which CWG has been involved with since 1996. The Chernobyl Children Life Line helps children suffering with low level radiation diseases caused by the explosion in Chernobyl on 26th April 1986. Its aim is to bring groups of children from Belarus to the UK for a month’s holiday, staying with host families. This gives the children a chance to breathe fresh air, eat fresh food free from contamination and build up their health. The Chernobyl Children Life Line brought its first group of children to the UK from Belarus in 1993 and it has brought at least one group every year since then. Most of the children have suffered many forms of cancer such as thyroid cancer, brain tumours, leukaemia, etc and they range in age from 8 – 16. For further information go to www.chernobylchildlifeline.org Peter Wade, said, “We are very pleased to be able to make this donation to the children of Belarus. It is an area that I have visited myself and so am particularly happy that we can donate money to help finance these trips to the UK as well as making the children’s visits to Canary Wharf as special as possible.” Valerie Howard, Co-ordinator for the Brentwood & Havering Link of Chernobyl Children Life Line, said, ”The children always thoroughly enjoy their visits to Canary Wharf and we, as always, are grateful for the kind support we receive from Canary Wharf Group.” | |||||||||||||||||||||||
