ONE CHURCHILL PLACE, CANARY WHARF WINS CONSIDERATE CONSTRUCTOR AWARD

One Churchill Place, a one million sq ft building completed last year at Canary Wharf and now occupied by Barclays, has won a silver award from the Considerate Constructors Scheme. The award was presented to Tony Shaughnessy, Logistics Manager for Canary Wharf Contractors (BP1) Ltd (CWCL).

The Considerate Constructors Scheme is a national initiative designed to improve the image of construction through better management and presentation of its sites. It aims to raise the standards of construction design and management above statutory requirements. Constructors must commit to an eight point Code of Practice that includes:

? Being considerate to all those affected by the construction process
? Being environmentally aware in the selection and use of resources, paying particular attention to pollution and waste management and keeping to a minimum noise from construction site activity at all times
? Keeping the site clean and in good order and ensuring that the surrounding area is kept free from mud, spillage and any unnecessary construction debris
? Being a good neighbour by undertaking full and regular consultation with neighbours regarding site activities
? Being safe
? Being responsible
? Being accountable to the public by providing site contact details and being available to deal with their concerns and developing good local relations.

All participating sites were monitored to assess adherence to the code of good practice. Annual awards are presented to approximately the best 7% of all participating sites.

Dean Ricci, Director of Construction for CWCL, commented,
“ Canary Wharf Contractors is particularly aware of the fact that the day to day activities of the estate still have to be maintained during construction of a building and we have strived towards minimising disruption and disturbance as far as possible. We are extremely pleased to receive this award and will set this achievement as a benchmark for future developments.”
