Canary Wharf Group has marked the Jewish Festival of Tu B’Shvat by planting a tree in Canada Square Park. The festival is the New Year of the Trees.
The 15th day of the month of Shvat marks the beginning of the ‘new year’ for trees for the purpose of calculating the year for tithing, as the produce of each year must be tithed separately. Scholars believe that the festival was originally an agricultural festival marking the emergence of Spring. The holiday is a way for Jews to symbolically bind themselves to their former homeland by eating food common to Israel and it is also customary to plant trees. Following the tree planting by Adrian Cohen, Partner at Clifford Chance, there was a Lunch and Learn reception at 10 Upper Bank Street, the Clifford Chance building where guests were presented with a Tu B’Shvat gift of a basket of dried and fresh fruit. Danny Seliger, Associate Director – Administration at Canary Wharf Management Limited, who organised the event, commented, “Canary Wharf Group has a varied events calendar which keenly supports a number of festivals of many religions and organises events to celebrate them. We understand the importance of supporting the local community and those that work in the area in this way.” |
